Nursing Home Rating System
Options for available nursing and rehabilitation care can be
overwhelming. To aid families struggling with such a decision, the
Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) created the Five-Star
Quality Rating System to help consumers, their families, and caregivers
compare nursing homes more easily.
While
Kindred recognizes the value of a nationwide rating system for nursing
homes, it's important to understand that the system is not perfect.
The
CMS system is designed to assess the "traditional" nursing home, one
typified by an elderly population and extended stays. Kindred
facilities, however, also provide specialized care for patients with
transitional needs - such as physical rehabilitation following surgery
or stroke - or dementia, common in the growing elderly population.
In
choosing a long-term care solution, Kindred Healthcare and CMS agree
that the five-star system is just one of many tools available for
gathering critical information. Nothing, however, can replace a visit
to a nursing and rehabilitation center to assess the environment,
culture and available services.
